Our Favorite Home Base Campground in East Tennessee

If you’ve followed us for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed that we return to the same campground again and again. While we love exploring new places, there is one campground that consistently feels like coming home: the Great Smoky Mountains / Townsend KOA Holiday.

Located along the Little River in Townsend, Tennessee, this campground has become our favorite home base for quick weekend getaways, remote work days, and relaxing stays near the Smokies.

Why We Keep Coming Back

For starters, the location is hard to beat. It’s less than an hour from home, making it perfect for a spontaneous weekend escape without spending half the day driving.

Many of the premium sites sit directly on the river, offering peaceful water views and the relaxing sound of flowing water throughout the day. The paved patio sites along the river are level, well-maintained, and surprisingly quiet at night.

One thing we particularly appreciate is the shade. Nearly every site is surrounded by mature trees, which helps keep temperatures comfortable during the hot Tennessee summers.

Pork & Bean Approved

Bean’s favorite campground activity is simple: finding the perfect spot to lay outside and watch the world go by.

The campground has a fantastic dog park, and our doodle could spend hours people-watching from the campsite while families stroll by on their way to the river.

While the sites are admittedly closer together than some state parks or private campgrounds, the landscaping does an excellent job of creating separation between sites. Trees, shrubs, and natural barriers help maintain privacy so you don’t feel like you’re camping on top of your neighbors.

The Best Kept Secret: Winter Camping

If you’ve ever looked at booking a riverfront site during peak season, you’ve probably noticed the price tag.

During the busiest months, waterfront sites can easily exceed $200 per night—and they’re often booked well in advance.

But here’s the secret: visit during the off-season.

Winter rates can drop to around $50 per night for many of those same premium riverfront sites. We’ve taken advantage of this several times, and it’s become one of our favorite places to work remotely for a few days while enjoying peaceful river views.

The only challenge we’ve encountered is internet connectivity. With the heavy tree canopy throughout the campground, Starlink can struggle to maintain a consistent connection. If you’re planning to work remotely, it’s something worth considering.

One of the biggest reasons we love this campground is how close it is to some of our favorite local spots.

Tequeria Macho Taco

We’ve eaten tacos all over the country, and this little taco truck still holds the top spot.

The food is consistently outstanding, the portions are generous, and every visit reminds us why we keep coming back. It’s one of those places we’d happily drive out of our way to visit.

As of today, these are still the best tacos we’ve found anywhere in the United States.

Gateway to the Smokies

The campground also serves as an excellent base camp for exploring the national park.

Within about 10 minutes you can reach:

Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Townsend Wye

Whether you’re looking for scenic drives, wildlife viewing, hiking trails, tubing, or photography opportunities, you’re close to some of the best outdoor experiences Tennessee has to offer.

Final Thoughts

The Townsend KOA isn’t the most secluded campground you’ll ever visit, and it isn’t the cheapest during peak season. But its location, riverfront sites, dog-friendly amenities, proximity to great food and drinks, and easy access to the Smokies make it one of our favorite campgrounds anywhere.

It’s the place we return to when we want a reliable getaway, a peaceful riverside campsite, and easy access to some of our favorite adventures.
